How to do well in a job interview.

Graduation is rapidly approaching and after 3 years of student life it is nearly time to enter the world of employment. I don't know about my fellow third year students, but I am really stressing about finding a job once uni is over. It probably doesn't help that after 3 years of studying I still have no idea what job I want to do, hopefully I am not the only person having this problem?!

However, everyone has to find a job eventually and in order to bag that dream job you must first be successful in your interview. I know from personal experience that interviews can be pretty scary so I have created a tried and tested guide on how to ace a job interview to help lower your stress levels and boost your confidence!

Make a good first impression.

First impressions may not be everything but they are very important in helping your potential employer to decide whether you are the right person for the job.
I have two rules I always stick to when trying to make a good first impression and so far they have never failed me in a job interview.

appropriate interview outfit for a woman- Make an effort with your appearance.
It doesn't matter if you have a first class degree, if you're not dressed appropriately your interviewer will think you are not taking the opportunity seriously.

DO
* Wear something smart/professional looking.
* Wear something you feel comfortable in.

DON'T
Inappropriate interview attire, hoody and jeans* Forget to iron your clothes.
* Wear your favourite hoody and jeans/trackies - they are good for lazing around the house but are not appropriate for an interview!
* Girls...don't wear anything too revealing and don't wear too much make up.

- Arrive on time

Turning up late to an interview can damage your chances before the interview has even begun so make sure you arrive a little early, your potential employer is going to want someone who is punctual!

If you are one of those people who are always running late, try sorting out your time management skills, its good practice for job interviews and for your future career.

Be prepared.

It is important that you do some research on your potential company/work place as knowing some relevant background information can really impress in an interview. Also take a look at the job description so you are prepared to answer any specific questions about your potential job.

If you are feeling really nervous and are worrying about what to say in the interview, set up a fake interview with a friend and practise answering some questions you are likely to be asked on the big day. Here are some good questions for you to have a look at.

Relax and be yourself.

shaking hands
Remember to smile!
Job interviews can be nerve wracking but try and relax as best you can and be yourself. Just remember, your interviewer must already like you if they have chosen you from several applicants to come for an interview.

If you suffer really bad with nerves then why not give rescue remedy a go? I have never used it but I know people who have and they say it really helps you keep calm and relaxed.

There is nothing worse than missing out on an opportunity because your nerves got the better of you so when it is time to enter the interview room just take a big breath and believe in yourself...you can do it!

Good luck!
